Alexa is a graduating senior Sociology major, 2023.

What made you decide to major in Sociology/Anthropology?

I chose sociology as a major because it gave me a little flexibility in deciding what I wanted as a career in the future. I started off in social work but wanted to broaden my horizons. I think it was a good choice because I’ve enjoyed being able to learn more about people and the way they interact. I’ve even had people tell me that the sociology degree rubs off on just the way I observe and take situations in everyday life.

What has been your favorite memory while at Whittier?

I commute and work full time outside of school so lately I haven’t spent much time on campus since then. I would say my favorite memories came before covid when I formed for a semester and was able to bond with people and kind of have fun with new experiences.

What are your plans after graduating?

I currently work as a full-time supervisor for the YMCA, but after graduating, I’m planning to work at a regional center as a case worker for special ed adults. It is not a sure plan but I’m hoping to start there… But first vacation in Mexico after graduation.

What advice would you give younger Sociology/Anthropology majors?

I would say to just be prepared. Some classes may seem easy but the readings do take up a good proportion of time. AND be prepared for a lot of research work, communicating with people and digging deep into stuff you’re passionate about. Nothing prepared me for the amount of work the sociology senior seminar would come with but I’m sure it’ll be rewarding in the end. I’d say also just to try and balance your time and make time for yourself because stress can definitely hinder your health.
